What should I expect during my child’s psychoeducational assessment?

What to Expect: The Assessment Timeline

An assessment is a collaborative and thorough process designed to uncover how your child learns, processes information, and navigates their world. We look beyond surface-level challenges to provide you with an objective, detailed map of their cognitive strengths and support needs.

From our initial parent consultation to the delivery of your customized learning blueprint, the comprehensive evaluation takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks from beginning to end. We walk with you through every step of this journey to ensure you feel supported, informed, and equipped to advocate for your child.

Here is exactly how the process unfolds:

The Assessment Process: Step-by-Step

01 | The Parent Consultation

Who is involved: Parents and the psychologist.

What happens: We meet online or in person without your child to review past report cards, discuss your child’s developmental history, and talk through the specific challenges they are facing at school or at home. This allows us to tailor the entire testing process to your child’s specific needs.

02 | The Testing Sessions

Who is involved: Your child and the psychologist.

What happens: Your child participates in one or more comfortable, interactive testing sessions. We use a mix of puzzles, memory exercises, academic tasks (reading, writing, and math), and hands-on games designed to observe how their brain processes information. We build in plenty of breaks and snack times to keep the energy positive.

03 | Gathering Input

Who is involved: Parents and teachers.

What happens: While testing is underway, we send out comprehensive online questionnaires to you and your child’s teachers. This ensures we get a complete, real-world view of how your child functions across different environments—not just in a quiet testing room, but in a busy classroom and at home.

04 | Analysis & Blueprinting

Who is involved: The psychologist.

What happens: Behind the scenes, we score the tests, analyze the teacher and parent observations, and synthesize the data. We write a detailed, professional clinical report that serves as a personalized learning blueprint for your child’s future success.

05 | The Roadmap Meeting & Child Feedback

Who is involved: Parents and the psychologist (with an optional session for your child).

What happens: We sit down together first without your child to explain the findings in plain, everyday language. We hand you the completed report, answer every question you have, and walk you through a practical, step-by-step strategy guide for both home and school.

Optional Child Session: At your discretion, we can also schedule a brief, strengths-focused mini-meeting directly with your child. This conversation is entirely tailored to their comfort level. We use this time to demystify the process, chat with them about how their unique brain learns best, celebrate their cognitive strengths, and talk about the specific tools that will make school feel easier for them.

06 | Classroom Support

Who is involved: Parents, the psychologist, and the school team.

What happens: You share the clinical report with your child’s school. The principal and special education team review our findings and recommendations to build or update your child’s support system—whether that means a formal accommodation plan or informal classroom adjustments.
