Can a Psychological Assessment Be Done Remotely? (In-Person vs. Virtual Testing)

The short answer is yes—but the feasibility of a remote assessment depends entirely on who is being evaluated and what questions the assessment needs to answer.

Thanks to secure, specialized digital testing platforms, clinical interviews and standardized cognitive batteries can often be delivered online via telehealth. However, the approach shifts significantly when comparing the clinical and logistical needs of adults versus children.

Virtual Assessments for Adults

For adults seeking clarity on academic accommodations, ADHD, learning profiles, mood disorders, or executive functioning, fully virtual or hybrid assessments are highly effective and legally recognized.

  • What works online: The clinical intake interview, diagnostic questionnaires, and history-gathering are seamless over video.
  • How testing works: Interactive cognitive, memory, attention, and psychodiagnostic batteries are administered via secure screen-sharing software.
  • The requirements: To ensure a valid result, you only need a quiet, distraction-free room, a reliable internet connection, and a computer or laptop with an integrated webcam and mouse.

Virtual Assessments for Children

While parent interviews and teacher rating scales are easily completed online, direct psychometric testing for children typically requires an in-person or hybrid framework.

  • The physical component: Standardized child batteries (like the WISC-V) frequently involve physical manipulatives, such as arranging blocks, drawing, or pointing to visual booklets. These cannot be difficult to accurately assess on a screen.
  • Behavioral observation: A vital part of a child’s assessment is observing how they manage frustration, when their attention drifts, and how they approach problem-solving. These subtle cues are easily lost over a video feed.
  • Engagement: Keeping a child focused and regulated for several hours requires the hands-on, dynamic presence of an in-person clinician.
