Your Experience: What Happens in Group Therapy
How Sessions Are Designed:
Each session is carefully designed to balance structure with flexibility. While each session may vary depending on the group’s focus and the needs of participants, most sessions include:
- Check-ins and homework review: Begin by connecting with the group and reflecting on your progress. This helps create continuity from previous sessions and allows everyone to share wins, challenges, or insights from homework practice.
- Psychoeducation and skill-building: Learn evidence-based tools and strategies, such as mindfulness, cognitive restructuring, emotion regulation, or boundary-setting. These skills are taught in a practical, hands-on way so you can apply them in your daily life.
- Group discussion and processing: Share your experiences, perspectives, and challenges in a supportive environment. Guided by the therapist, participants explore themes, provide mutual support, and practice communication and coping strategies.
- Homework planning and reflection: End each session with actionable steps to continue your growth outside of the group. This may include journaling exercises, mindfulness practice, skill application, or personal reflection prompts.
Therapist Support and Guidance
Our therapists actively cultivate a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment. They monitor group dynamics, gently guide conversations, and ensure everyone has a chance to contribute. Using trauma-informed, culturally responsive approaches, they support participants in exploring sensitive topics while maintaining psychological safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
1. Who can join group therapy at Toronto Psychology Clinic?
Any Ontario resident above the age of 18 is eligible for group therapy at TPC. Note: if you are attending a virtual group, you must be in Ontario for every session throughout the duration of the program.
-
2. Can I join if I’ve never done therapy before?
Absolutely. Our groups are designed for all adults ready to learn and grow, regardless of prior experience.
-
3. Can I join if I’m already in therapy with another professional?
Maybe. Some of our therapists have obligations that they can’t duplicate treatment with another professional. Because group therapy can overlap with the goals and focus of individual therapy, it’s usually not appropriate to participate in both at the same time if there’s significant overlap in treatment focus with your individual therapy. There are some exceptions. We encourage you to complete the screening form for the program you’re interested in to determine if you would be eligible. We also recommend that you discuss joining a group with your current therapist as well.
-
4. Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to attend group therapy at Toronto Psychology Clinic. However, if you plan to use insurance for reimbursement, some insurers may require a referral from your doctor—so it’s a good idea to check with your insurance company first.
-
5. What if I miss a session?
You may miss one session with a full refund. Additional missed sessions are fully charged.
-
6. Is group therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of our group therapy programs. All participants agree to keep what is shared in the group strictly private, and sessions are never recorded. Therapists also maintain professional confidentiality in accordance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) of Ontario and Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). While the group provides a safe space for sharing, it’s important to remember that absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in a group setting, since multiple participants are involved. Our therapists guide the group in creating clear expectations and boundaries to foster a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
-
7. How big are the groups?
Our groups are intentionally small—typically 4–10 participants—so everyone has space to be truly seen, heard, and supported. This intimate setting fosters deeper connection, trust, and personal growth, allowing you to practice new skills, share experiences, and receive meaningful feedback in a safe, caring environment.
-
8. What qualifications do the group therapists have?
All of our group therapists are fully licensed with their professional colleges (CPBAO, CRPO, OCSWSSW) and bring years of experience supporting clients in the areas covered by their groups. They are trained in trauma-informed, culturally responsive care to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants. To learn more about a specific therapist, please visit our Meet Our Team Page.
-
9. How much does group therapy cost?
Group therapy is often a more affordable option than individual therapy, typically costing about 30–50% less per individual session. The exact price depends on the specific group you’re interested in—please see the Group Programs We Offer section above for details. Beyond being cost-effective, groups provide a supportive and structured environment where you can learn new skills, gain insight, and connect with others facing similar challenges, making them an accessible and meaningful option for ongoing mental health care.
-
10. Will my insurance cover the cost of group therapy?
Group therapy at Toronto Psychology Clinic is not covered by OHIP. Some private insurance plans may cover group therapy, but coverage varies depending on your provider, so it’s important to check with your insurance company directly. While our clinic does not offer direct billing, we provide a complete receipt for each session that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement.
-
11. How do I pay?
All group therapy sessions are paid by credit card. We accept Mastercard, VISA, and American Express. A valid credit card is required upfront to enroll in any group program. Payment is processed securely, and you will receive a detailed receipt for your records—useful if you plan to submit a claim to your insurance provider or for tax purposes.
